This project is a collaged and illustrated book inspired by feelings of childhood nostalgia during a time of change. For my thesis, I wanted to capture all of the emotions I've been feeling in my last semester of college as I've been faced with the event in which I truly go into the world, something I think everyone can relate to. When we are met with new challenges and journeys in life, I believe that we tend to look back at comforting, familiar moments to cushion the anticipation of moving forward towards something greater.

Congratulations!

INSTRUCTOR

Sean McCabe

This memory book is a tribute to life and all the experiences that have brought me to where I am today. It is a celebration of the joy that can be found in even the smallest moments and a reminder of the importance of cherishing our memories and the people that have shaped us. Through my design, I hope to inspire readers to reflect on their own lives and to embrace the beauty and wonder that surrounds us every day.

The Approach

I had multiple ideas in mind on how to tackle representing these emotions, but the base component that I knew I wanted to include was to implement my own childhood photos. Growing up, my mom has always had a box in her closet that she'd pull out every now and then of family photos and I remember looking through them and reminiscing on each image.

Inspiration

Besides wanting to use childhood photos, I also wanted to incorporate illustration, as I've always enjoyed drawing and believed showing my progress as a kid having fun with Crayolas to an adult getting her degree in art would be nice symbolism of how I've grown in skill as well as how I've grown as a person.

Poetry would also be a large part of this book as I quite enjoy poetry and felt using the combination of words and imagery would help convey the feelings I was looking to convey, better than if I just used imagery.

The Design Process

I began my process by writing a poem. I wanted the poem to be short and sweet, but lengthy enough to capture the detail of emotion that I was trying to convey and also have enough for a decent number of spreads.

She’s been a wonderful help during the entire progress of this project and I couldn’t have done it without her, as she helped retrieving most of the materials for my book. I contacted my mom mostly in the beginning of creating my book and communicated with her about the images I was looking for. Sometimes I had to be more specific if I was looking for a certain emotion for a spread and needed help getting just the right image for it. It was fun and reminiscent that, even though I couldn’t be there in person to look through the photos with her, it felt like we were experiencing the memories together. The process of collecting these photos of my childhood and piecing them together image by image gave me intense emotions on some nights, and the close connection I felt only drove me to continue working on the project.

Layout

After working with my mom to collect the images I needed, I began creating each spread separately. I didn’t create these spreads in a numerical order, instead I decided to outline which lines of my poem I wanted to have their own spreads within my book and I designed each spread based on when the visuals became more clear and thought out in my head per section.

One challenge I had while creating the layout for each spread was deciding where to include illustration. My project began with equal illustration and photography, but as I continued my project, I made the decision to lean more into a scrapbook feel with illustration scattered throughout. I really wanted each page to be different and unique, to symbolize how life frequently changes. This made me struggle even more as to where I could fit in illustration, and I contemplated a few times scrapping it entirely. But I pressed on with my original vision and came to a happy medium.

I overcame this challenge by thinking of a way to connect each page with a common theme, no matter how different they were systematically or stylistically. The through-line of my project was to include something about myself on every page, whether that me symbolic, illustrated imagery or blatant photos of myself. In the end, the patterns of illustration, photography, collage, color, and poetry unify each spread to convey a single narrative.
